Oil Pulling

While looking up the benefits to coconut oil (wow), I ran across the term "oil pulling" and began to investigate. I am intrigued at the idea that swishing oil in your mouth can heal and detoxify the body. One site explained it as being like car oil--it goes around throughout the engine (or whatever), and as it does, the oil picks up dirt, bacteria, etc. What you do is take one tablespoon of vegetable oil (NO! not the cooking, unhealthy "vegetable oil") and, on an empty stomach, swish it around your mouth gently for 15-20 minutes. After that time, you spit it out and brush your teeth. Now, it is recommended to use sunflower or sesame oil because they have the best disease-fighting attributes. However, since I do not have either of those on hand, I used coconut oil this morning.

*barf* Ok, so I didn't actually throw up, but it sure was close. Upon putting the 1 tablespoon of oil into my mouth, I immediately felt bad. If I moved my mouth at all, I heaved. After resisting a few heaves, I decided to go to the toilet just in case. When the next one came, I resisted it again, but I also went ahead and spit out the oil. Now, the oil did not taste bad, which is surprising since I have never liked eating coconut. Here is a list of possible reasons this happened.

1-My mind is stuck on the idea that I should never ever insert a tablespoon of fat into my mouth.
2-My pregnancy hormones have changed my tastes and thus its willingness to accept new things into my body.
3-As the site suggests, this may happen due to a high level of toxins in the body. They said to go ahead and spit it out (or throw up), and just take another spoonful afterward to finish the time.
4-I was not keen on have 1 T of solid mass just sitting in my mouth. Yes, that means I did not melt the oil first.

So, tomorrow morning I am going to try oil pulling again. This time I am only going to use one teaspoon, and it will be melted. We'll see if that changes anything. If it goes well, I will slowly build up to the recommended one tablespoon.
